The Best Furniture is Free furniture
I have a confession to make.... I love Free Furniture! Free furniture comes with a history, a story and a price tag that just can't be argued with. Like this small dresser that I am using as a nightstand in my son's bedroom. This piece was gifted to me by a women who was moving. For her this piece represented another weight of stress in the moving process so she was happy to part with it. She shared with me that the piece was Swedish in origin and purchased by her from a local antique store. It has the most lovely scalloped handles and old key holes that I adore. It is solid wood and clearly made with care.
TIPS AND TRICKS
Now you might be thinking how in the world does someone come across free furniture. Well here are my best tips and tricks:
1.) Join a Buy Nothing Group - These wonderful groups foster community and are wonderful resources for free furniture.
2.) Check Craigslist's Free Stuff - This one takes a bit more digging but there are often heavy pieces of furniture like armoires and bookcases that are beautiful and listed purely because they are a hassle for people to move.
3.) Join an online tag sale group - Now and then items will be listed as free on these group sites as well.
4.) Keep an eye out for Bulk Furniture Garbage Days in your neighborhood - This tip works best for city dwellers. Enjoy the day and go shopping curbside.
Remember these three simple rules when using free furniture in your home. They will keep your home looking designed on any budget rather than an episode of Hoarders or an antique shop:
1.) Never take anything that doesn't work with the furniture plan for your space. If its not the right scale walkaway and let it bless someone else.
2.) Don't take home a piece of furniture that's too much of a project! If you don't have time to reupholster, repaint, and refinish that project piece then it's not worth its price tag.
3.) Would you pay money for it if it was for sale? If so then it's a keeper.
